"Battle of the Sea" is a strategy game that combines attacks on other players with attacks on a computer-generated base (Dark Guard). The game’s storyline is set in a tropical island, where players have defenses and troops (similar to Supercell’s Clash of Clans).

Players can build their bases, upgrade their defenses and other buildings, and unlock troops to upgrade. Boom Beach combines single player team games with the ability to attack other players in multiplayer mode on the same map. The game allows players to fight an enemy called "The Blackguard", which is usually represented by Lt. Hammerman. Other computer-generated enemies are Dr. T and Colonel Gearheart.

In addition to the main aspects of the game, there is also a form of cooperation in which players gather "Intel" (by destroying troops in defense, winning attacks or passing rewards), and then use them to attack computer-generated bases in task force operations.

There are 9 types of troops in the game, namely Riflemen, Heavy Machine Gunners, Rocket Gunners, Native Warriors, Tanks, Doctors, Bombardiers, Chariots of Flames, Cryoneer.
