The main gameplay of Hill Climb Racing is a 2D physics-based racing game where you must drive until the end of the race (in a time trial) or drive as far as possible on a 2D plane while avoiding running out of fuel or hitting the driver Bill's head.

During the game, two pedal-like buttons appear on the screen corresponding to the left and right, the left is the brake, which allows the car to slow down or move backwards, and the right is the throttle, which allows the car to move forward.

These buttons add additional functionality when the car loses its center of gravity in the air due to maneuvering. Holding the right pedal in the air will cause the front of the car to raise and rotate around the center axis, which may cause the car to backflip, or holding the brake in the air, which means holding the left pedal will cause the rear of the car to raise and rotate around the center axis, which may cause you to frontflip. Aerial controls must be mastered to land properly from a jump, correct the vehicle's direction over bumps and slopes or trigger adjustment parts such as landing boosters or jump impacts, and holding both pedals at the same time will stop the vehicle.
